Our goal is to digitalize our engineering processes to improve:
- Productivity
- Efficiency
- Accuracy
Our Digital Solutions team brings together a diverse range of skills essential for developing impactful applications. We're a team of designers, product owners, developers and testers who work closely to define clear product visions and capture detailed requirements, ensuring that every solution aligns with user needs. We leverage modern tech stacks and agile development practices to build reliable, scalable, and maintainable software.
By combining deep domain knowledge with cutting-edge digital technology, the team aims to improve traditional engineering workflows. We focus on creating tools that modernize and digitize existing practices, helping end users work more efficiently and effectively. This blend of expertise and innovation drives continuous improvement in how teams operate and deliver value.
Step 1:
Innovation Funnel

Idea Selection
Ideas for solutions can be submitted by anyone in STS and these will be entered into our innovation funnel. We prirortise ideas to focus on based on business and end user value. The ideas are scored and eventually prioiritized by our executive committee after careful deliberation.
Step 2:
Design

Solution Definition
We work with key stakeholders and end users to understand the problem and map out requirements, once again focusing on business value and useability. We convert requirements into a prototype which we test and refine.
Step 3: Development

Product Development
Once the requirements have been fully captured, we will begin the process of developing the end product, or at least the Minimum Viable Product. We use Agile methodology to develop in increments allowing us to regularly test and adapt ensuring we are developing exactly what our end users and stakeholders want/need.
Step 4:
Rollout

Testing & Training
Once we have finished with development we will ensure user adoption by doing User Acceptance Testing. We also provide user training in the form of documentation and videos.

Our Python Community
Alongside the delivery of new tools and systems onto projects, KBR’s Digital Team have also been building up technical expertise across all Sustainable Tech, primarily through the ‘Digital Innovation Community’ upskilling colleagues in Python coding, through to AI Basics.
Some of the more recent activities have included hackathons, weekly coffee mornings and creating a custom KBR centric Python course with Percipio.
Instead of describing what it is like to be part of the Digital Innovation Community, we feel it is better to show you through some of the coding challenges we work together to solve, or the steps we take to define problems. Coding Challenges:
- How many prime numbers are there below 1000? See if you can solve this without the aid of google!
- Suppose you had 2Million tags of the structure: AREA-DISCIPLINE-EQUIPMENT_TYPE-NUMBER, how might you efficiently sort them by discipline? (Excel can only go up to 1,048,576 rows) Or quickly check for duplicates?
- Starting in the top left corner of a 2x2 grid and only being able to move to the right and down, there are exactly 6 routes to the bottom right corner. How many routes are there through a 20x20 grid?

Often it can be difficult to get permission to spend time solving problems with code or technology on your projects, as it can appear to detract from directly producing deliverables, and often the benefits are not always fully understood. So, other than just learning to code, we have found understanding the best way to frame problems and diagnose route causes is really important.Click here for more information. If the coding puzzles sparked your interest, or if you're passionate about redefining how we work through using digital solutions, please join our Teams community, share your ideas, and be part of changing the future of digital at KBR.
